Chapel Gate Café

The Chapel Gate Café provides support for Balance Summer Camp. Set up by the Brothers of Charity Services and opening its doors in June 2008, this café helps to provide training and paid employment for people with intellectual disabilities.

The café currently employs 22 staff – 19 of whom are services users. We are proud to say that this is the only café in Cork providing paid employment with adults with special needs.

Chapel Gate Café facilitates events to raise money in support of Balance Summer Camp – such as their annual coffee morning. The café is used by many of the balance camp attendees and their families, and acts as a community base for Balance Summer Camp.

The café provides ongoing support to its staff who work from between 1 and 22 hours per week. Responsibilities such as dealing with customers, barista training, kitchen porter responsibilities, clearing tables and preparing and serving food gives these adults a sense of purpose and stability. It also promotes self-confidence and self-esteem, allowing them to live more independently. This work is also central to creating a more inclusive society by integrating adults with special needs into their local community.

Wayne is one of Chapel Gate Café’s wonderful employees. He has been working at the café for 9 years and works 21 hours per week. Wayne loves the work he does here, and has an amazing rapport with customers.
